Toward cross-granular querying over modularized ontologies
نویسنده
چکیده
To address the problems of both structured coordination of linked and modularised ontologies and to query a large dynamic ontology system, we propose a basic granularity framework and a set of functions to query such a granulated system. The granularity framework enforces a constrained and structured modularization. This facilitates automation of both dividing a large body of represented information as well as relinking the pieces. The functions enable basic cross-granular querying in a transparent and scalable way, as they rely on the unambiguous management layer provided by the granularity framework, and are reusable for ontologies represented and stored in different formats.

Background and Aim: Ontologies facilitate data integration, exchange, searching and querying. Open Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) Foundry is a solution for creating reference ontologies. In this foundry, the design of ontologies is based on established principles which allow for their interactions as a single system. The purpose of this study is to determine the main features of ontologies develop...
متن کاملGranular Ontologies and Graphical In-Place Querying
The data ontologies in a form of UML Class diagrams are discussed in this paper. We call the data ontology granular, if its corresponding instance diagrams (data) can be divided into separate parts called slices. A typical example of granular ontologies is process ontologies, where slices are run-time instances of these processes. Based on the notion of granularity a graphical inplace query lan...
متن کاملGranular information retrieval from the Gene Ontology and from the Foundational Model of Anatomy with OQAFMA
Current persistent storage implementations of large bio-ontologies fall short in meeting usability and reusability requirements. Limitations are demonstrated with two representative ontologies-stored-in-databases, the Gene Ontology and the Foundational Model of Anatomy. Their un-usability for granular information retrieval is not due to a lack of knowledge modelled in the respective ontologies,...
متن کاملSemantically enabling a genome-wide association study database
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND The amount of data generated from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has grown rapidly, but considerations for GWAS phenotype data reuse and interchange have not kept pace. This impacts on the work of GWAS Central - a free and open access resource for the advanced querying and comparison of summary-level genetic association data. The benefits of employing ontologies...
متن کاملSome Experiments on the Usage of a Deductive Database for RDFS Querying and Reasoning
Ontologies are pervading many areas of knowledge representation and management. To date, most research efforts have been spent on the development of sufficiently expressive languages for the representation and querying of ontologies; however, querying efficiency has received attention only recently, especially for ontologies referring to large amounts of data. In fact, it is still uncertain how...
